Breakdown...

Post by ringding » Tue Dec 18, 2018 9:55 am

I suppose it was going to happen at some point. The Barracuda has disgraced herself and stranded me at the road side. First time in 8yrs.
Had a misfire come on out of nowhere. I had something similar before which was a wire chafed through in the head light shell so hoped it would be that again. It's not though. Having traced what I could at the roadside I've given in and called recovery.
Although I've just noticed a pool of oil underneath. I checked the plug and it wasn't sooty. So I'm passing the time waiting for the truck trying to work out what's wrong!
There's oil coming from the gear shift and from (I think) the oil return line from the tank. Is it possible to have a problem with the oil flow that leads to a crankcase pressure issue?
Last day at work today and I had a lot to do! Doh!

Fuel, timed spark and compression is what you need, hope the oil is a red herring....do you want me to call in sick for you?

I'll start the full diagnosis this evening. Definitely got fuel, but it's wet and miserable so I'm cowering in a bus shelter whilst I wait 2hrs for recovery (based on their estimate).
I'm hoping the oil is just a coincidence too, but I don't really believe in them.
The boss is away today so I don't have to make my excuses until the new year! :ban

You going to the VMCC meet at the Daneway on New years Day?

I don't know. We are actually as home for a change so it's possible. Do you have to be a member?

I've never been a member but turn up most years, its just a bunch turning up at a pub for a pint/coffee and a chin-wag. Normally a good selection of interesting oldies, accompanied by their bikes...I'll post something in Meetings

There's oil coming from the gear shift
Sounds like the small oil return hole in the inner timing cover is blocked so breathed out oil instead of draining back into the crankcase gets stuck between the inner and out timing covers, once it gets as high as the gear lever it leaks out. If it gets higher then it can get into the points chamber and mess up the points depending on what version cover you have and how the LT cable enters the points chamber.

It seems to have been two things, a tired old battery and a leak to earth in the dip switch on the handle bars. I think the oil leak is only from the shaking the engine got from the backfires loosening the fittings.
Will have to wait until the shops are open after Christmas to get the bits I need so will use the time to rewire some of the loom in the headlight. I found a few connectors and joints that are on their last legs.
