on the road again 4

Postby beat » Mon May 02, 2016 9:53 pm

hi gents,

depending on the whetter, in a week I should start my trip to France, Ireland, maybe Scotland and England and back trough France as well.
I should be back on the 25. of June, and, - as a other target, - I should not empty the credit card tooooo much.....

the plan is to take the ferry from Roscoff, France , on Friday eavening to Cork, Ireland.

so the 1000 km's from my place to Roscoff should be done in 4 days, fallowing the River LOIRE from NEVERS to ORLEANS, I would like to visit some of the nice Castels in this earea.

just for fun I will report a bit what the B50 all is doing whilst this time, hopefully it is more of <200 than of <202

first of all, I replaced the small leather bag by one of the hairy monkeys.
this monkeys are relicts from the WW 1 from the Swiss Armi, used as personaly backpack.
DSCN2601.jpg
usualy I carry the raingear in this smal bag

DSCN2602.jpg
the money will carry 3Liter of Eng. oil, one spare rear chain and warm clothe

today I have changed engine oil and replaced oil filter and was on a small trip just to see: everithing is ok.

Hi All

An update on beat's trip:

I got a phone call from him at 06:15am last Thursday. He obviously gets up early! He had arrived in Roscoff, Brittany, France the day before, aiming to get a ferry of to Eire (Ireland). The ferry had broken down though, and wasn't likely to be fixed for a number of days. The only working ferry was headed to Plymouth, UK so he re-jigged his itinerary and climbed aboard.

He'd stayed overnight in Plymouth and was now heading to Fishguard, Wales to catch his ferry to Rosslare, Eire. He was heading up to North Devon before turning Eastwards towards Bristol. I asked him to ring me again when he was within striking distance of Bristol and I'd go and meet him and lead him back to my place for the evening.

The call came late afternoon, and he'd chosen to park up in one of the seedier and less accessible suburbs of the city. We met up OK and I lead him back home through the city-centre rush-hour traffic. Not ideal conditions for a Swiss visitor on an old BSA. (I was on my Aprilia). Weather was very hot and sticky so difficult for clutch and tickover. No problems though.

We sat and chatted and chatted some more. I cooked him a chilli. I booked him a hotel in Fishguard for the following night. Bossy heard there was free food and drink on the go so turned up on his Triumph 500 engined B50. More chat. My girlfriend came over for what she describes a 'surreal' evening. More chat and a few beers quaffed. (though not by beat). A bed was made up. I was relegated to the dining room floor. Bossy went home. Mandy went home. A great evening.

He was up early next morning too to give his bike a check over. Nothing needed doing of course. It really is an amazing piece of home-brewed engineering when seen in the flesh.

All done and we had breakfast whilst waiting for the rush-hour traffic to subside. I'd tried all evening to persuade him that with no rush the best route to Fishguard was Chepstow, Monmouth, Abergavenny, Brecon and Carmarthen. Some brilliant biking roads. Beat was having none of it though and insisted on going via the M4 all the way. I also told him that it was a law that you must drink Guinness when in Ireland. He was prepared to break the law...

I led him out of Bristol and made sure he got on the M4 pointing towards Wales and not London...

Got a text from him this morning. He was having a great time in Ireland and was waiting for a ferry over the River Shannon. And he was still an outlaw.

An amazing guy.

Ian

I took some photos on my phone. I thought we now had a 2MB image size? Apparently not. I'll resize them all and post them some other time.

Heard from beat over the weekend - he's now in Scotland!
I told him it was the law to drink Scotch whisky there, but I'm not sure he believes me.

Anyway he's now done 4,000 kilometres in 2 weeks on his B50 with no problems.

I know I do the occasional long day on my B44, but never such a marathon as that!

Maybe his home-brewed ignition system, vastly revised oil circulation, home made petrol tank, etc is the future!

To do this trip with his homebreew of a a B50 / Cheney is impressive.

Glad to have him as a friend.

We don't even travel as far as Beat in our old bus. People think we are crazy to go so far in a H.O.S. I wish I was that brave.

just a quick update that Beat is here in sunny South Yorkshire and is our guest for the night. A pleasure to see again after his last visit 8 years ago in Wiltshire and arranged a get together with Andy Chaos. Am sure Mark will post a picture later but so good to see him again. 5000 kilometres travelled and still going strong

If he's continuing southwards, divert him off the motorways and down through the Peak District.

What a shock, Ian's message "Beat's on his way".
Ears prepared for the sound of a B50 and eyes constantly checking the security cameras.
Beat defeated them all as we heard the door alarm and he quietly walks in!
This time, down tools and shut up the workshop. He caught us in a flap last time as we were panicking for the Farleigh meeting.
He also needed to make a new rear brake plate and rebuild his engine.
So no work required, (must be due to the PES parts ;-) )
PES works shut up and locked down we escorted Beat to our home so he could be fed and watered after his long day in the saddle.
As Andy mentioned he popped over on his Ariel to meet the legend that is Beat, a good evening was had by all.
A simple breakfast was had and route south discussed, carefully pointing out the junctions to aim him in the right direction.
"Turn left, don't go straight on you'll end up in Sheffield"
Franticly we waved as we escorted him in the right direction only for Beat to go straight on!!! Who knows where he will landed next
He might makes Gerry's this evening if he escapes Sheffield.

Latest update Beat pushed on to Poole, excluding detours that would be around 300 miles in one day!
Sadly, he missed Gerry. Possibly due to detours or just homesick.
