Still moving forward at what seems like snail pace <201 I got both of the side panels mostly done today, welding mounting brackets on tomorrow. My biggest issue right now is that I really need to get started building the wheels up but I have been unable to source gold alloy dimpled rims. I have the color scheme all worked out for this bike and it needs the gold rims. The only ones I can find are Sun non dimpled rims and the are way expensive. I thought I was going to be able to get Excels but there are none available in gold. I am going to use a 1980 Y*maha 465 front hub as it has 36 holes compared to the original 40 hole hub.

Have you considered getting bare rims with dimples and getting them annodised?

Working on the airbox today. Still putting off starting the gas tank :mrgreen: Think I'm going to bite the bullet on the gold Sun rims even though they are non dimpled, that way I can still use the original front hub so will be eligable for AHRMA.

Front hub not looking too good:( May just smooth it out or get it built up with weld then stick it in the lathe.

Well it's not much but I got the swingarm finished with the chain guide and chain wearstrip sorted. I really need to get the wheels built so I can get rear mudguard position determined then I can make the seat to suit.

Well I was able to repair my front hub using my brand new tig welder. First time trying to weld cast ally with tig, well I've actually done very little tig work ever. Finished part looks ok, it looked like a pigeon crapped on it before maching :lol: When it's painted black should look pretty good I think.

Also made a points cover. Just need to engrave it and get some countersunk or pan head screws. Anyone know what thread the screws are?

Getting ready to start fabbing the tank up. Bought half a sheet of 3003 0.063" ally. Also bought a small cheap ($125) english wheel from Home Cheapo and as a lot of the reviews said it is rubbish and unusable due to misalignment of top and bottom rollers totally crap tolerance on moving parts. However for that price it comes with a full set of dies so that in itself is a bargain. I am modifying the frame and getting everything lined up then I'll be ready to start forming! Here is first attempt on a small piece of scrap, works a treat. Never used an english wheel before.

Sun rims and spoke kits showed up from Buchanans today :thumb I was wary about ordering them as it was a $900 purchase but this is top shelf kit. Just need to do a proper job of building them up, don't want any trouble when I'm landing the 80ft triple :mrgreen:

One thing you need to be aware of is that Buchanans always include a slip of paper that seems to indicate "80 in-lbs" torque may be required for heavy bikes. I don't think that's necessary, but if you call them, they will tell you the correct torque for your application.

Thanks Tom, I did a little research and settled on 35 in-lbs. My KTM's are 6nm which is almost twice as much but those hubs and spokes are really stout. Will check them after the first ride.

Moving forward with the tank. I am not going for perfection here, more function. Still learning my new tig welder, one thing is for sure it is so much easier tacking with tig than oxy/acetylene. Still may do the final welding with gas though.

As far as I am aware O/A is the best way to weld it, as mentioned that is how most pros do it.

I have welded up one tank with O/A before and it is not easy and I have a lot of O/A welding experience mostly with steel though. The bungs I will use the tig though as I think it is easier when welding thick to thin material. However I have only just started with tig welding so that will not be easy!

Bike is looking great John!

After welding up my tank I did a bunch of "book learning" on youtube and propane and low gas pressure seem to be the ticket for gas welding. I got it to work with 1100 filler but wasn't very consistent. Frank

^^^ Not the same. The original post was about motorcycle fuel tanks. Those tanks do look nice.
Tig would be the best way for them.

I make bike tanks too- all TIG welded and from 5005 not the easy soft 3003.

I have made things out of 5052 before. It work hardens pretty quick. I was completely unaware of 5005 till you brought it up. thx
