300-20 inner tube warning

Postby roadplough » Tue Mar 12, 2013 2:04 pm

3 years on and I've just had my first and last dealing with vintagetyres.
I bought a couple of their 20 inch tubes.

the rubber band is hiding the crucial numeral

The sales bloke at vintage tyres, let's call him 'Charlie' (since he must be a right one) was reluctant to post to Australia saying that the cost of postage and duty for the tubes is likely to be much more than the tubes themselves so he suggested a Michelin 21MD tube (marked 300-21) which I should find locally.

I didn't want a 21 inch tube for my 20" wheel so after much some negotiation I bought the tubes from vintagetyres web site rather than ebay because it was easier for 'Charlie' that way. There's no VAT chargeable to OS customers via the web site but being a nice guy I paid the ebay price which includes VAT, saying to 'Charlie' he might buy himself a beer with the extra.
So the tubes arrived, I pulled one out and saw 80/100-21 embossed on it
I emailed 'Charlie' who said to look at the other side ..which sure enough is embossed with 26x3/300-20

'Charlie' insists these tubes were designed to fit 20 inch rims :laugh

atmospheric pressure

I think it's actually a 2.75-21 and has no name or manufacturer's mark.
This tube needs high pressure to fill out a 300-20 and even then barely touches the bead well. And 80/100 is somewhat fatter than regular 300 profile.

Sorry to read about your "interesting" dealing with vintagetyres. They are only 10mins down the road from me. I have only had two dealings with them a few years ago, both at their site in the Beaulieu Estate (I think for a Dunlop K70 & a TT100). They weren't that cheap and I didn't like their customer sales attitude much. I haven't needed any tyres or inner tubes recently, but the last place I used was Wheelhouse Tyres, part of Central Wheel Components http://www.central-wheel.co.uk/external ... links.html At the time they were cheaper including p&p than going to vintagetyres (that was for Dunlop TT100s for my R3 & T120R). I haven't checked their website to see if they do the tyre or inner tube you want.

Slightly off-topic. In long distance trials, I only carry a spare 21" front tube.

The thinking is you can stuff a 21" front tube inside an 18" rear tyre and inflate it OK as a get me to the end of the day fix. You can't get a 4.00 x 18" rear tube inside a 21" front tyre ...
