Muffler Turning Indicator Black

Post by b50reels » Sat Sep 21, 2019 3:23 am

Hello Everyone!

This is probably known by most everyone, but just in case it is not, I will offer up the way I dealt with the muffler/black indicator problem. I bought a 45 degree female copper tubing fitting (1 1/2" O.D.), cut a couple of slots at the muffler end, painted it with black heat paint, and secured it to the end of the muffler with a stainless steel hose clamp. For added insurance I got a small spring and secured it between the end of the fitting and the stock black heat shield. I also put a section of black rubber tubing over the spring to eliminate any chafing of the heat shield. It does not attract attention and the hose clamp is hidden by the heat shield.

Regards, Mike

Yes, this was the accepted method on the 1971 B25 & B50 models way back when. The other trick was to get rid of about 12 lbs of muffler and use an aftermarket muffler with a 45 degree angle at the inlet along with a piece of chain link fencing tensioner bar to support the 4 lb muffler. On my current 1972 B50, I use a 6 lb 1968 B44 Victor Special muffler with a 1 3/8 OD and 1 1/2 ID 3" extension. The mounting of the muffler is supported by a 4" piece of flat steel mounted to the frame lower muffler mount and the muffler mounting slots.

Thanks again eebtr7. I do like the looks of the aftermarket mufflers but this bike only had 1200 miles on it when I got it and I have been hesitant to change many of the outwardly cosmetic things. I play with the idea of getting a second single and doing all the things I want to do to it. Oh well,
maybe someday.
