Foam Air Filter/Air Box For MX

Post by johnu » Mon May 25, 2020 8:26 pm

I've just been reading some of the air filter threads but still not sure what I'm going to use on the MX race bike I'm building. I would like to use an oiled foam filter as that is what I am use to using on my modern mxer's. I am boxing in the center triangle area where the battery would be with aluminum sheet. It will not be totally sealed but pretty close. Hard part is finding a boot to go from the carb into the ally box. Has anyone done anything like this. I've seen the original BSA set up with the paper filter.

Have a look at a boot from a single shock bike. Most of them will have an offset and a mouth the right diameter. They tend to be fairly long but are a good start.
If you love it, lube it.

PES make a fibreglass "V" that fits within the frame, it is plumbed for an oily foam air filter and has a recess for the battery. Best email or call Anita.

I made an aluminium air filter box on my 76 CCM and used a "slip on" type Twin Air filter which has the rubber directly on the foam.
Advantage: You just need a hole in front for the rubber which has not to be airtight as the rubber mounts directly onto the carb.
