Martin Lampkin RIP

Post by Ian Hingley » Sun Apr 03, 2016 11:17 pm

No B50 content here, no BSA content either (afaik).

But another legend has gone and I've lost one of my heroes.

To the non competition orientated members, Martin Lampkin was a trials rider. And so much more. A straight-talking, no-nonsense, tight-fisted Yorkshireman, who didn't suffer fools gladly. OK, a Yorkshireman... ;-)

In the mid-seventies he was part of the British elite of Lampkin, Rathmell, Andrews, Thorpe, Shepherd, etc. My idols at the time as a bike-besotted teenager.

He won the inaugral World Trials Championship back in 1975.

After his solo career, he devoted himself to acting as coach/minder to his son Dougie who himself became a multi world trials champion.

He's died of cancer. Only 7 years older than me.

Sorry for a good mans loss especially from a cruel thing like cancer. When I go I hope it's a heart attack and I'm dead before I hit the ground.

So sad. Am sure Big Martin is already riding a Bultaco in heaven. RIP Big Man, it was an honour to have met you a few times.
