what size ball bearing?

Post by Mike A » Tue May 30, 2017 8:46 pm

Can anyone tell me the correct size ball bearing for my '69 B44VS clutch operating rack? I keep coming up with 7/32, which seems way too big, as the size when I search suppliers websites yet the actual recess in the rack will only accept a 4/32 ball? (it sits comfortably at half depth) would a 4/32 do the job?

I'd agree Midgie, it makes more sense than a 7/32"

No, it's like I said in the original post, 7/32" is quoted but there is no way it will fit, I've got a few and tried them, they just sit on the top of the rack, I have two outer covers and both have the rack machined for a smaller ball, as Midgie said, 5/32"

I've recently fitted a 7/32" ball to my 1970 B44VS, obtained from P.E.S. (Part No. 70-8019), after hell's own job of removing a worn 1/4" ball which had been previously forced into the recess. I assume that freedom for the ball to rotate in the socket is a good thing.

It turns out that the balls I purchased (that were sold sold as clutch rack balls) were certainly NOT 7/32" but a fair bit larger, I have now got the correct size so it's problem solved!

So the 7/32" is right then?

7/32" is right according to the Rupert Ratio book. Not measured the one out of mine with a mic yet but it looks certainly smaller than 1/4".

7/32" --- I found out the hard way. But, if you're having trouble finding them, try your K*wasak* dealer. Mine had a whole bag of them with a K*wasak* part number. The Japanese frequently used imperial sized ball bearings in their steering stem bearings.

Yes, it will teach me to measure things rather than accept what the supplier says

Just out of interest I've just found a way of getting an obstinate ball out of the rack, I just put a blowtorch on it for 30 seconds or so, the ball popped out and shot across the workshop! it turned the grease it was seated in with into gas and expanded I reckon.
