Lozenge silencer

Post by JerryT » Thu Feb 13, 2020 4:18 pm

I bought my B50 late last year. The bike is a good runner so I am more than happy to use it and enjoy riding it around. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
I am however determined to return the bike to something like originality which means I needed a new silencer, electrical box and indicators.

After drawing a blank on finding a half decent silencer I decided to have one manufactured. A forum member was kind enough to give me an old damaged lozenge as a pattern and I had the shells made in a small engineering shop. I made up the internals and prepped the inlet and tail pipes and then had the two halves of the shell MIG welded. The S/S heatshield was bought off ebay and I made the black profiled heatshield. The purists may be able to pick faults in the finished product but I am more than happy with the result. It makes a much better exhaust sound compared to the 'peanut'
Next job will be to install the electrical box (bought off ebay) and after that the indicators shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Roll on the warmer days.

If indicators are on the cards, it might have been worth kicking the exhaust out at the tail pipe....

Yes, I followed the advice on Lathejack's posts and offset my tail pipe by approx 10 degrees.

Hi, have you made any extra silencers, because I may be interested in purchasing one please. Alternatively, I quite like your old peanut with bracket, is that 11/2" inlet and is it available. I am not too far from you, only in Belper Derbyshire.
Cheers Jon

Hi Jerry, I was hoping to have the B50 on the road for this summer, so the lozenge may have to wait. I have bought another downpipe with a different bend at the end so I can fit a silencer like your peanut on. I had these bikes back in the early 1980's, and had a peanut like that on a B44, I had a lot of unit singles back in the day. How much do you want for the peanut please. Cheers Jon.
