LED Headlight/Zener Diode Question

Post by Bevin »

In a 2018 post re Advantages of a power box/Podtronics over Zener the point is made that running with the headlight on reduces the heat of the zener diode heat sink. I always use the headlight when I ride my B44 (for daylight visibility - I rarely ride it at night). I have just ordered a full set of LED bulbs from Paul Goff, I presume the reduced wattage used by the LED's will put more stress on the zener and cause it to more heat? Should I convert to a Podtronics type regulator to compensate?

With a good battery, good wiring, earths and the correct heat sink, the stock zener will be fine. PS - did you get negative polarity LEDs?

I ordered dual polarity LED's. I just installed a new Lucas headlight lens/reflector even with the old 446 bulb the headlight is much brighter which is great since the objective is to make me more visible to others in addition to reducing wattage.
