Gear change quadrant repair

You must have all seen or had a damaged shaft. I'm sure one or two of you have found a solution to get you out of trouble.

Here is the PES way.

First machine the quadrant so that you have a 9mm diameter stub 10mm long.

The PES shaft is CNC machined from EN16 high tensile steel. So should give much better service than the original or cheap pattern ones you find kicking around. It is also precision bored to 9mm to aid fitting and to provide a reliable joint.

We prefer to tig weld the new shaft, although many other jointing techniques could be used. If you were to bronze weld it, we would recommend machining the stub to 8.75mm and fluxing the contact faces to ensure a strong joint.

And of course we are more than happy to do this repair for you if you don't have the equipment at hand.

To avoid the need to weld the shaft with the possibility of distortion, I bored the quadrant to give a press fit to the shaft and fitted a roll pin. Using a torque wrench I found that you needed to put 180lb on the pedal before the pin sheared. If you need that sort of pressure to change gear a worn spline is the least of your problems.
